system checks with full freon, compressor runs when sytem bypassed - is this a simple sensor replacement, like the ambient air temp sensor in front of the radiator or another one ?

 

First thing to do is enter diagnostics and erase all A/C related codes. If hard codes are in memory, the signal will not go to the clutch to engage it. Search for how to enter diagnostics if you are unaware of how to do this.
