IMO, dont waste your money on Chilton or Hayes.
those are supplemental and nice to own AFTER
you got the FACTORY MANUAL, not before.

if you are serious what you need is :

"GM Factory Manual".
Includes: body, frame, front and rear suspension, brakes, engine, cooling,
fuel system, emission control systems, electrical, transmission, clutch, steering,
wheels, tires, and accessories.

its been a very long day .. i'm in a rush so i popped up this manual in 10 seconds ..
there are probably dozens out there for around $30 - $40 ..
probably - i'm not sure what the going price is...

ebay item number 110090683837

I agree with the Mods, get the two-volume FSM - a small investment with high returns!

There is no P0745 listed for 1997.

Yes, P0741 TCC System Stuck Off. The PCM inhibits Torque Converter Clutch and also 4th gear if the tranny is in hot mode. Hot mode means fluid problems; check the level and inspect the lines to the radiator, they may be pinched or twisted. That's the easy part.

Real diagnostics can only be done with a Tech-2 tool, but it's likely that one or several of the TCC valves have gotten stuck OFF due to sediment or binding, or O-rings, seals are worn or cut.

Check if you have P0719 set, which would mean Brake Switch Circuit Low Input, and usually indicates electrical connection problems either at the PCM or at the TCC brake switch side. This would be the lesser of the possible evils...

would that cause tranny fluid not to enter the tranny
Hot mode is just that: the tranny gets too hot due to inadequate cooling (or excessive friction). Another cause of overheating (beside restrictions in cooling lines) could be loss of fluid, i.e., an external leak.

If the code and the symptoms are consequences of damage or stuck vlaves, only a Tech-2 can tell you what's going on. Check the fluid level, and if it's low or dark brownish and has a burnt smell to it, that would point to internal problems.

Get under the car and clean and reseat the electrical connectors to the tranny, especially if you have the other code (P0719) set as well.

That transmission is very sturdy, but stuff happens and, as with any other unit that has moving parts, keeping the fluids fresh and clean is maintenance job No. 1. And yet another "free" advice: proper diagnostics is always preferable to trial-and-error frontal attacks.
