Post Leaking Trunk(storage space) 2006 SXR

Found that my carpet was wet in the storage space of my 2006 SRX. The storage space is where the jack and the headrest are stored for a power third row set model. I have a dog so the third row seat is always down, but had it up the other day and found the the jack was rusting from being wet from the carpet. I have checked the tubes that run in the track of the lift gate they are fine. It doesn’t seem to being coming from under the truck. I had a tow package put on about a year ago. Any ideas where this water could be coming from would be great thanks.

I too had moisture in the rear well and after much searching, found that it was the seal between the license plate/light assembly and the rear hatch.

I discovered a lot of water in my (2005 SRX) rear well and removed at least a half gallon using my ShopVac. My jack was rusted and needed a couple of shots from my trusty can of WD40 to loosen it up. It appears to have never been used. I bought the SRX as the second owner from a Mitsubishi dealer in November 2012.

There is no sign whatever that the water entered from above the bottom level of the well. i.e. from the tailgate seal surrounds or license plate holder. My initial thought was that it was entering from below near where the spare tire is located. The water somehow gets in but can't get back out.

As there were spots of black mold forming on the carpet in the well, I have taken the drastic step of removing the large 'storage tray' assembly (three bolts in the forward section of the well area), cut the carpet and rubber around the well and pulled the section out to expose the bare metal chassis.

This is the only possible solution to drying out the carpet and foam rubber backing. I certainly did not want more mold and the resulting odor or health issues that go along with leaving it there.

Now I have to find out how the water got there in the first place. Stay tuned.
