Default Battery

The battery in my car needs replaced. What steps do I need to take to ensure that at least the key still starts the car after I put in a new battery? I have the key that has the little black chip in it.

Replacing the battery should have no effect on whether your key works or not. Right?

Thanks for all the help guys. I am waiting on my thermogasket kit to arrive. I hope I have better luck than another member had with his. I still need to change the oil, tranny fluid, tune up, fuel filter and air filter. I guess I got what I paid for, I didnt think it was too bad for 2k for the car.
