computer virus and worms - Phony ADMIN attempting to infect your computer
He's listed as "banned" with 0 posts... i dont' know how he keeps sending PM's to people
no really .. that is a different user than the ones you see banned.
i also see its a handful of users having fun at our expense.
i cant ban what i cannot see, so the rules just changed a bit.
will shall see what happens after this.
they can no longer send PMs unless they activate the account and post.
then i can see them and vaporize them.
keep in mind that there is a whole industry that makes money selling products to fix the damage they cause .. hmm .. on purpose.
and not all of these businesses are overseas ..
i normally stay away from recommending programs, but i think this time i must make an exception.
if you want a honest and respectful company, housecall of trendmicro is a very good choice.
i been using it for years .. i run it when things dont feel right .. its a free top notch virus killer and it kills very well!
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...scription.html
the other is ad-aware .. i run it daily .. IMO, its the greatest. erases your tracks, removes ads, malicious files, quarantines suspicious files, etc... etc... its free w/o the virus killing capability ..
http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_4...in;contentBody
both are FREE !!!
of course, they might suggest that you consider upgrading to the pro versions with all the bells and whistles.

who ?
.
They're using different spellings of the names to get by the bans.
TeamModerators
Admin&Moderator
AdminModerators
etc., etc.
Some have a "Confirm?" box, also, meaning they want you to click the box to confirm you read/received the message. DON'T click it!

In addition to stealth's recommendation's for nasty spyware etc. add these to your arsenal, all free!,,,,,,,, Malwarebytes finds and removes nasty stuff http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Spybot Search And Destroy - you can 'immunize' to block things from ever attacking your browser http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html A squared - http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ Super Anti Spyware - http://www.superantispyware.com/ Hijack this - If your browser is hijacked this will list all the nasty stuff installed in the registry. Do not delete anything unless you are sure it is indeed bad things. This is not for the average computer user! http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Here is a link to an online reader for hijackthis, after you do a scan you can save the log file and paste it here and it will read it and show good or bad,,,,,,,AGAIN use caution before deleting things in the registry!! http://www.hijackthis.de/ I use all of these including the 2 that stealth mentioned as just 1 antispyware is not enough because different programs find different things! Hope this helps

i haven't the first idea what you just said and i dont download junk on my computer... i have antivirus stuff on my compter from the store where i bought it and i dont go to websites unknown... in fact i only signed up here when i bought a cadillac, but i've since sold it a few weeks later due to problems it encountered for a lincoln... so why is it that i havent been on here for almost a year or at least 6=7 months and i get this junk from someone i have no idea who it is, etc etc etc... and you want me to download stuff - i dont know you - how do i know you're not this same guy wanting me to sing up for some site like he is??
i dont fall for that crap...
Whats the deal with this? I only check this on my work computer on my breaks and we are **** about our security updates and things of that nature. I don't click on any links I don't know and it wants me to click on a link to scan my computer. Well I am not scanning the work computer with something other than we have. So whats the deal? I got three messages all from different moderators, no moderators names just very generic iffy stuff listed in the notifications. Not sure if there is a thread about it or something to worry about but I am not clicking on it or replying till I know for sure.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

based on the highlighted comment, allow me to make one huge last note.
yes of course, behavior is always your best protection.
but also trusting anti-virus programs is foolish unless you also practice prevention
- experimenting with sites is of course risky,
- opening files in emails is of course HIGHLY RISKY, even if sent by 'friends',
- opening emails that are sent by strangers are really high risk,
but when the day is done, just like you can catch the flu, even if you do all the right things, so can your computer get sick. what can you do?
1. make a RESCUE disk BEFORE anything goes wrong.
2. practice prevention
3. monitor your system, your registry, and your incoming emails
4. have the program of your choice to clean and cure the ills that will afflict your computer.
5. checking for 'security updates' for your browsers is a very smart idea.
6. Turn on your firewall and manage it
7. At home use a ROUTER .. the best firewall ever invented.
know that if you use the web, the question is never if, but when.
in fact, i guarantee that everyone's computer has a virus or a worm. several years ago a worm was released that affected 100% of all computers on the web within 30 seconds. MS designed and released a fix as a patch and later added the patch to what is called PACK 2 .. MS is now on PACK 3 .. these packs, among other security issues, deal with the incurable worms that live in every computer.
Unlike a virus, a WORM does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause at least some harm to the network, if only by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer.
worms come from the web itself, virus come with files and not always meant to be harmful.
The Nachi family of worms was designed to download and install patches from Microsoft's website to fix vulnerabilities in the host system. In practice, although this may have made these systems more secure, it generated considerable network traffic, rebooted the machine in the course of patching it, and did its work without the consent of the computer's owner or user. It is still out there.
Some worms, XSS worms being one, were written for research to determine the factors of how worms spread, such as social activity and change in user behavior - spying? Other worms are pranks, others are malicious. what they all have in common is that they do find your computer and jump in w/o your approval. Like a flee on a dog.
You feel violated yet?
As I said, programs such ad-aware and registry programs are designed to find the fleas and inform you.
what you do after the flees are found, is all up to you.
I would NEVER recommend it, but i operate about a dozen computers with no anti-virus software of any sort, i despise their quirky ways, i find such software fairly ineffective and basically worthless unless you update the data files every single day, they put a huge load on computers and bandwidth.
several of my computers are NETBOOKS on the move that gain access to the web via any, and i mean ANY available connection.
however, i do practice the 7 steps above religiously! Behavior rules !
And yes, my rescue disks are called upon now and then. No big deal, 20 minutes and its done.
BTW, I grew up with the dial up BBS, Banyan and Novell networks .. before the internet. I saw the birth of the virus and worm infested systems. To me, they are but a cold, they come, they cant be stopped, so take an aspirin and sleep it off .. in our case, the aspirin being the programs that neutralize the computer ills.
.
In the April-June, 2008, issue of IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, computer scientists found that the key is for software to monitor the number of scans that machines on a network sends out. When a machine starts sending out too many scans, it is a sign that it has been infected, allowing administrators to take it off line. check it, clean it up, and put it back in line clean.
