quick tranny question
I have a 71 deville and earlier today i got stuck in some muddy grass (dont ask haha) and I noticed the car seemed to be having the one wheel squeel effect. Only one wheel was spining so i couldnt move even though the other rear wheel was firmly on dry grass. I thought all 71 devilles had some form of LSD or posi trac correct me if i'm wrong?

RE: quick tranny question
71 Cadillacs had 2 transmissions 1 for the Eldorado (THM425)and 1 for the rest (THM400). Your post relates to rear differential which limit slip/"posi"tive "trac"tion was an uncommon option in the relatively flat areas of the country. In the mountains the limited slip was the norm, the "open" or non "posi" axle was unusual to the point of strange that it wasn't. The old "posi" unit hurt fuel economy and could cause trouble on ice with the back end wanting to lead the front. It could get you up a snow covered hill (more than 40ft rise) though, and that is why you will find it where the hill are. GM has never offered "Limited Slip" in a fwd.
