Default want to buy a caddy...help!!!

Hey, i've been looking to get a cadillac to replace my first car, a`93 maxima (i'm 17 and in my last year of high school)...I've come across a `84 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, and I've heard ALOT of bad from this decade of cars. I know that the HT4100 isn't one of the best engines out there, but my question is, did the deville ONLY come witha ht4100 or was there a regular 4.1L that didn't do the whole 8-6-4 thing??, or do i have engines mixed up?And also the guy said it's his parents car and they bought it brand new in `84 and they've done some recent maintence to it,and the way he talks,it wasn't a daily driver and it has 105,000 miles he said...now is that good for this year caddy that was 'garage kept'??......any help would be appreciated THANKS

1984 Deville had 2 engine choices HT4100 or 5.7 Diesel. If it is a clean car. I might not worry about the HT4100 engine, as with any used car ask to take to reputable shop of your choosing to have checked out PRIOR to purchase. The few dollar you spend may re-assure you or save from a money pit. Good Luck

Default 6.0-liter Cadillac V-8-6-4

The par below should answer the other question,

On any alum engine car, i be having a compression test just to make sure the heads/gaskets
are OK - ANY ALUMINUM Engine.

How much $$$$ are we talking about?

Infamy came in 1981 with the introduction of the V-8-6-4 variable displacement V8. Based on the 6.0-liter Cadillac V8, the V-8-6-4 theory was that individual cylinders would be electronically shut down as engine loads varied; a V8 for acceleration, a V6 for moderate loads and a V4 during cruise. It would have been nice — if it had worked. Instead, it was a mechanical nightmare only slightly less embarrassing than the ongoing diesel debacle. The V-8-6-4 also came hooked to the Eldo's first four-speed automatic transmission. Beyond that, Buick's 125 horsepower 4.1-liter V6 was also offered as an option — the first time any Eldorado had ever been offered with less than eight cylinders' worth of power (the Seville had the ignominy of ending Cadillac's 66-year streak of eight-or-more cylinders of power in 1980). Frankly, 1981 was the low point for Cadillac engineering.

the guy said he'd like 1900 for the car, and with all things going my way (me liking the car....and parents, etc) i'd probably try to talk him down to like 16 or so

thanks alot for the help, at first i thought 105K wasnt bad for a 84 model car but looking at that link, it makes the one i'm looking at seem like its over the hill or somethin', but hopefully all will go well, because even if my car comes out of the shop okay, i think i might still get rid of it and replace it with some old school 80's big body caddy and i was thinking of maybe putting some sort of spokes on there along with a sound system upgrade (nothin that will take the cadillac image away too too much) but thanks for the help again, if i look at the car soon i'll repost and let you know what comes up
