tires and NITROGEN
ORIGINAL: lyoung48
On the Nitrogen, I am retired SWBT and we used nitrogen to pressurize cable. It is what we call dry air, no moisture, and it is very stable when tempurature changes....I think it is a waste of time and money to put it in tires, but, what do I know.

In outside plant some telephone cables are from 25 pair to 600 pair cables. They are plastic insulated wires inside a metal sheath with a hard rubber outside layer. By pressurizing the cable you keep moisture out...wires carrying DC voltage do not like moisture (48v to 90 volt). Also, some older cables were paper insulated wires with a lead sheath. The cables were normally pressurized to 6 lbs with Nitrogen. Varying temperatures would not effect pressure and the Nitrogen kept the wires dry. Also, cables could be laid on the bottom of lakes or rivers without getting the wires wet.
If you are running a performance tire and are concerned about tires heating up during racing I would recommend using Nitrogen......so, there is basic telco cabling 101.

my set of BFG / KO tires at Sam's came in. they installed them and they seem to
drive just fine with the dirty air they use - hot day so the air should be dry'r .

need to get a new set of tires for the 4x4.
i use BFG 31" 1050 A/T tires, and upon pricing them,
i found the installed and fully balanced set cheaper
at SAM's than COSTCO.
i gotta drive 12 miles to SAM's so i asked COSTCO down
the street what gives?
you ready for the answer ? ? ? ? i think they were serious.
"COSTCO uses NITROGEN instead of dirty air"
who cares !
it is a 22 yr old 4x4, mild but real off-road usage, mostly drives
under 45mpg in town, occassional 75mph highways, and
30 mph or slower off-road.
on a sad note, the cost of the tires will be about 50% of
what the whole vehicle is worth.
