Default power steering noise

I am the second owner of an '02 SLS and have had for bout a year. The power steering pump is noisy and groans while turning the wheels. I replaced the pump myself and the new pump sounds the same. After installing the new pump, I steered througn lock to lock several times hoping that would get out any air. Are these pumps naturally noisy or is there something else I should check.. 59k miles. Thanks. mark

A little whine from the front of engine with hood open,is not uncommon. It should not be noticible with hood closed. Better describe noise when turning.

Thanks.. The noise is a typical "hydraulic" type whine/groan that is often heard with pumps of this type, but is louder that I think it should be on a car like this. It is heard when thewheels are turnedwhether or not thecar is in motion. It can be heard under the hood naturally, butis very noticeable also in the passenger compartment. I am accustomed to just hearing more of a "hiss" from other power steering systems.. thanks
