Question Ignition problem

Greetings,
I have a 1989 Eldorado that will not allow the key switch to return to the off position and release the key. It feels like there is something internal that is keeping it from returning to normal.

I was reading here that one of my options may be to replace the column or key switch. Both requiring a lot of work, some of which I may not be comfortable with. I have looked in the Cadillac service manual and online and I just can't get any good diagrams on how the key switch works in the column.

My question is this, the car is old, it has been hit in the rear corner panel and has almost 164,000 miles on it. It is still a good driver, but I am wondering if I can just drill into the column where the key switch is and defeat the thing that is keeping it from going back to the normal position.

Thanks

Okay, took everything apart ahead of the start switch. The gear drive that engages the start switch is mangled. I don't want to have to go further into the column unless necessary.

I have a new ignition switch and the VATS system will allow the car to start.

Here's my question, can I install a push to start switch and bypass the mechanical start system? Seems possible, just the diagram is a bit of a nightmare and I don't want to hose anything up.

Thanks.
