engine trans limp mode

Ok i have a 94 sts the transmission is in limp mode (only 2ed gear) can i trans be sent into limp mode by an engine code or only a trans code?

I can't think of any engine code that would limit 2nd gear only.
ABS/TCS can cause 2nd gear start default.
