Engine Problems 500 ci
Hey guys, I just found this site and I am not real good on this computer thing or as a mechanic as well, but I try anyway. I recently bought 1975 Eldorado that is from Califonia so it has AIR pump & stuff on it. Car ran terrible when purchased but after getting vacuum lines all hooked up & A rebuilt carb. I could at least drive up & down the road. It still boggs quite bad when trying to accelrate but after you get up to 30-40 mph it will then take off & 4 barrel seems to work fine. I thought timing might be off & when I checked it was way above pointer. About 20 dbtc. I would guess. When I tried to adjust, the vacuum module on the dist. hits a bracket & bolt on the intake. I could only get down to about 12 dbtc. My book says that with carb. should be 6 dbtc. Any ideas? This car has lots of problems but has a lot of potental with only 50,000 miles on odom. & no rust. Thanks.

Did you pull off the vacuum line from the spark advance and plug it while checking the timing? If not you might be getting a bad reading. The air pumps are useless but it probably isn't causing the car to perform poorly. Did you replace plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter.... If not you might want to. These cars aren't hard to figure out so you got that going for you.
It sounds like you've eliminated the obvious stuff. How about an exhaust blockage. If this car still has its catalytic convertor it may be clogged. My car had a similar problem years ago and it ended up being a collapsed double wall exhaust pipe. The only difference is it never stopped bogging and would only get to maybe 65mph max. Or maybe it could be the fuel filter? You may have already replaced the small filter, at fuel entry line into the carb, but there's another one as well. Mine's on the frame cross-member right below the motor. It's a metal inline canister type. Probably the same on your car.
Thanks CADI70 for the advise. Got the timing strightened out but have not had car back out on the road. Hey if you know anything about trim pieces on doors, I am tring to reinstall the 1/2in. wide piece that goes along the middle of the door. I got new clips but do not know quite how to install? Thanks
I can tell you how mine fastens. It's probably similar.
Put the plastic clips on the door. Put the two metal stud clips on the trim. With finesse and care use a rubber mallet against the trim until it pops onto the clips. It usually pops on without much trouble. Make sure you have the same/right size clips anything bigger and you could damage the trim trying to get it on. Lastly move the trim to where you want it and turn down the hex nuts on the two metal end clips.

I thought that might work but did not want to screw up a good piece of trim. Thanks
Also; Anyone know where to get misc. trim pieces? Such as the one that continues from the door to the wheelwell. Thanks again.
