Default Electronic Climate Control 1983 Eldorado

Experiencing problems with my Electronic Climate Control. I have replaced this unit with 2 used rebuilt units. All have the same problems: i.e. 1. Plenty of heat when set at 80 and above and very cold when 70 or below. But when set between 70 and 80 you will get either toom heat to too much cool. No middle range. Where else what els should I look at, or do I need to pay the big bucks for a new unit. Any & all suggestions would be appreciated.

Also need to replace the radio, Should I just purchase a new unit or can I get the old unit rebuilt or upgraded to todays standards?

Hey there, back again, just noticed yyour other post. The control head is usually not the problem it is more the the mode doors in the dash. Either the defrost door , the mixture door, or the mode door (a/c outlet) You would be wise to make sure that the heater water valve is functioning properly, it is controlled by a vacuum motor. the defrost door is also controlled by a vacuum motor as is the a/c outlet. Check all vac hoses for cracks or kinks. Also take off the glove box liner and you will get to the air mix door. The hinges on this door will become rusty from condensation and you should spray some WD40 on the hinge and work it back and forth to free it up. The radios are still available as AM/ FM, Cassette with AM/FM and clock, or 10 CD changer with AM/FM and clock. They custom designed to fit in your dash. Prices vary from $170.00 to about $560.00.

Car has electric climate control. there are 2 temp sensors. 1 monitors outside air temp the other inside. There is vent on right side of dash ,I believe above glove box, inside air should be pulled into it when hvac is on.You can test it with something that smokes held near it. With hvac on smoke should be drawn in to it. There is an electric motor that controls air mix door made into programmer. With glove box out you can watch it operation.kinks in hose the runs from a/c case to dash can cause your condition. A factory manual is important to be able to work on your car

Found an outfit in Hemmings News, "Ray's Auto Stereo", which is located in Sacramento, CA. He will rebuilt the radio for $100 to $125 with 1+ warranty. Will also fix the digital read out to work like new.

Purchased a factory manual. Now I know I am in over my head.

Took the glove box out and was able to check out the air mix door. An electric motor operates this door. Appears that the door when not connected to the moter moves very freely. When connected to the door the electric motor moves very very slowly when responding to temperature changes which I initiate via the control unit on the dash. Should this door move quickly? when responding to temp changes???

With programmer disconnected from door, air mix door should move freely. If arm on programmer moves very slow, you probly need programmer.

Thank you very much for your input and help.

Do you have any sites or recommendations for finding used parts?

I found a used AC/Heater Programer from a Cadillac junk yard in PHX. The used unit did the trick.

FYI, Delco no longer makes this unit, so you can either have it rebuilt of find a working unit in a junk yard.

Again, thank you for your help.

Have another question? While fooling or reaching in and out of the glove box the lock mechanisum came apart. Does anyone have a drawing of how that fits together. I found a roll pin, a double spring and the latch. Looks like the roll pin goes through the two holes on the main assembly, then through each side of the double spring and should also go through the latch, however, the roll pin is fits very tight and really does not want to go through the latch assembly. Before I force it I would like to know I am doing it correctly.
