Default Brake system sludge .... hygroscopic, absorbs moisture

Today I changed out a failed master cylinder on the 4x4. The part was new in 2004, so it was about 4 years old. What got my attention is that the brake fluid in it had turned to sludge, with the consistency of pudding.
I have a record of flushing the brake system then, so it was only 4 year old fluid. Now, that vehicle does see a high degree of wetness and abuse, so it is possible that system was exposed to more moisture than most cars.

The same thing happened on a Dodge truck a few years ago, locking up a front caliper.

So .. why do people think that brake fluid is FOR-LIFE?
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, absorbs moisture !

People, you are spending $200+ doing a brake job, ask the shop to go one more step .. flush the system.
Expect them to tell you that you dont need it. After all, they will get you later when something else fails.

Upon doing a brake job should be plenty .. unless you drive an Allante with the Bosch III system .. then go to our Allante section as different rules apply.
