Default 99 Catera Sport Seems To Be Limping... Help?

Hey! I'm new, but I had a few questions (okay, just one) about my baby 99 Catera Sport that I just love. I'll do my best to describe the issue, and if I can provide more information, please do not hesistate to ask.

My Catera was heading up to Fremont Peak Observatory last night when about a mile away from the peak (elevation about 3k) she stopped going. Stopped going as in, I put my foot down on the gas, the car hit high revs (about 6k!) and there was NO speed, no forward thrust, no go.

This problem lasted into this morning; I can't go above 20 MPH without maxing out my revs! This is a little scary, as I don't want to blow a rod...

As much as I have been able to gather, it seems like it could be electrical or transmission related, but I'm not sure. I hope to be taking it in to a mechanics soon, but until then, it'd be nice to narrow down the issue.

The only steps I've taken to remedy this are turning the car off and back on. The first few seconds, I seem to get some thrust, but when the car should shift, the RPMs just hit the roof.

And, just FYI, I'm a fairly technical guy (used to work at Apple), so don't be afraid to talk jargon with me.

Thanks again!

I apologize for my latecoming responses; I'm at work.

The car had it's oil changed and all of that taken care of at 80,000, just prior to my purchasing it. It's supposed to be due at 91000-ish, according to Jiffy Lube's sticker on the car, but I was planning on getting it done within the next few days.

The car is in need of new tires, as well as a waterpump and timing belt at about 100,000. I'm going to take the car right to 100,000 first, though, just so I don't have to worry about making numbers match up.

If there is anything else I can provide, please don't hesitate to ask.

As much as I hate to say it but alot of catera's had a few major porblems that can cost thousands to repair. They are cool cars but can be quite spendy to own especially with higher mileage. Transmission problems were very common on those. Also some oil leaks and coolant leaks that are very expensive to repair. Sorry to let you know this about your baby but just want you to be informed.

i think the translation got lost there, between oil, and trans fluid..... have you or prior to buying, they changed transmission fluid, or a tranny service been done. in fact have you check trans fluid???
