Default Cadillac 2005 STS got stuck in snow

I bought another Cadillac looking forward to driving in the snow. I used to own a Catera years ago, but got rid of it in 2002. Anyway, back to the issue at hand. Has anyone else gotten stuck in justa couple inches of snow? I can't believe how bad this thing is. My Catera would go through anything, I use to pass trucks on the expressway, and now I get stuck everywhere I go. I guess I understand why they made is in all wheel drive.

Any suggestions would be good, but I'm guessing it's mostly the stock tires, but let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,

Nathan

Natex14,

My o7 STS got stuck2 weeks ago too.I was going down ourresidential street just to see how it handled. Icould feel it really struggling and tried to turn around in a neighbors driveway.Needed a pushback the other way back home.I should have got AWD or at least the limited slip diiferential. My wifes 2000 camaro with electronic traction control and limited slip differential plowed thru deeper snow with no problem. Oh well , I just wait for the plow to come thru.. I cant remember the last time I go stuck in the snow. Maybe back in the 60's with my 1960 Impala. ( boy i'm gettin old!!)

Back to the real issue... I would also like to know if there isanything that can be done to change the "getting stuck in the snow problem". The owners manual said to turn off traction control and try to rock back and forth. That doesn't work either. By the way way, I was stuck in a 7 inch snowfall. My brother in Colorado uses sand bags in the back of his 1995 Camaro. He doesnt even have traction control on that car!! He says that helps. Happy New Year to all you members.

Default Cadillac 2005 STS in snow

two things ...

1. when i sat on the AWD, i knew Cadillac had made another good decision
and joined the "world class" fleet. there are many reasons you find the AWD
on such machines, with a price to match.

2. weight/footprint square inches.
the fatter the footprint, the more weight you need to "bite" into ice and snow.

3. tire pattern/age.
what tires are you guys running? how many miles on them? inflation pressure?

on a separate note, i am disappointed with Cadillac's decision for the '09 CTS-V without AWD.
absolutely a poor decision for a car aspiring to the "world class" market.
the only thing i can think off is that someone overrode the original announcement/decision
to keep the Vette from being further diminished.
as it is now the CTS-V are leaving the Vette's in the dust.

Hey Stomper

My 07 has Michelin Pilot HXM4 P225/45 R17 on the rear and P235/50 R17 on the front. 2900 miles on the tires with 31 pounds cold.

thanks .. we'll see what Gary has to say .. he is our resident "tire guru"

my 1st reaction, based on personal exp, is that at least the inflation pressure is a bit low for snow/ice,
if it was me i be pumping up to maybe 36 - 38 psi. i dont know about the thread.

The tires are fine. I have never been stuck in the snow with a Caddy. They were front wheel drive devilles for hunting. It takes some experience to "rock" the car without screwing it up too much.

Which Caddy have you just purchased?

I bought my wife a 2007 STS V8 with the 1SG pkg which includes traction control and limited slip diff. The first time she drove in snow she came home crying because the car was all over the road and she was scared. She said she never had this problem with our old 2000 FWD STS V8. So I invested lotsa bucks and got 4 used rims and 4 new Blizzak LM-22 snow tires, however since she hasn't had to drive in snow yet this winter I really don't have anything to report if the snow tires make any difference.

Hey pjbizjak

I guess that throws my thoughts on the limited slip differential out the window. AWD on this car is probably the real solution. Too late for that now. Let us know how the tires work out for you. We just had another 6 inch snow fall here. I took my wifes 2004 Grand Prix GTP out in the sub and it plowed thru like a tank. I'd be afraid to take my 07 STS out right now.
