You have 2 choices, get gas before 3 gallons shows or drop the tank and replace the sender. Sometimes the rubber hose joining the pump to the sender can get a pin hole and suck air when fuel is low, so ck the hoses connecting the pump. Replace pump? hard call, mine is as old as yours and assuming fuel filter gets changed every 5 years or so, and it never runs out of gas, it will go a long, long time. Running out of gas is the most common cause of pump failure. The fuel lubricates the pump, keeping it cool. Out of gas, pump on, it burns up.
