Ihave a 94 seville sls and for some reason when i start the car the rpms go straight down to zero and shuts off. i have to give it gas and hold down on the pedal for a lil while then the car stays on.this happens only when the car is cold, when its warm it just starts up like normal. also from time to time while driving the rpms on the car get all wacked out like its trying to turn off while driving. someone please help some mechanic told me it could be the idle speed control but not sure.

 

Check for codes. Also check throttle body for carbon build up and clean as necessary.

 

how do u check the codes on a 94 seville i tried pressing the off and both temp buttons together with ignition key on the on position nothing happens... and wheres the throttle body

 

Press Off and RED warmer button to get codes. Throttle body is where hose from air cleaner assembly attaches to engine.

 

sounds like an idle control problem, IAC maybeh??

 

yea its definatley a problem with the idle control/speed control.... the actator motor takes a long time to close and open.... i hear it buzzing. i had so many codes i dont know where to start mostley for my suspension.

 

Get a tooth brush, a can of throttlebody cleaner and a screw driver (for removing air duct). Pull off the tube from the air cleaner to the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor. push open the butterfly of the throttly body and go to town, it will look almost like tar. Mine was so bad I used a rag to wipe out the build-up. I guess it will take 30 minutes of cleaning to realy get it good. It will smoke like crazy when you start it back up. I did mine on a northstar I just bought a couple weeks ago at 130K mi and it was so bad I think I am going to have to go back in for a check-up.
