Default "System Problem"

Hi everyone,

I have a 1988 Cadillac Seville, and yesterday when I started the car the console display said "System Problem", nothing else. The odometer and trip odometer read all zeros, the fuel gauge is flashing E, and the speedo says 0 regardless of what speed I drive.

Despite this, the car seems to be running fine.

I have disconnected, cleaned and replaced each plug to the two computers behind the glove box, and tried disconnecting the battery negative for a minute. Nothing has changed.

Since I have no display, I can't get any ECM / BCM codes, so it can't tell me WHAT the "system problem" is.

Can anyone give me a hint?

Richard

to reboot, disconnect battery for 15+ minutes .. 1 minute is not enough.
while disconnected, find, check and re tighten as many grounds as you can.
we need to get to the codes since we dont know which "system" has the problem.
to me, it almost sounds like the BCM is off line, or worse.

hopefully slowroll will have more clues ...

I havea 90 Seville and that has happened to me once before as well. Are your cooling fans jammed up with ice? Mine gave the message after driving through deep snow and after I unstuck the cooling fans the message went away. Might not be the issue, but it was in my cir***stance.

There can be many causes unfortunately, try unplugging a/c programmer see what happens next would be DIC. Trunk pull down is another possible cause. Modules aren't talking which is causing problem. post results.
