Default how do I test struts?

Is there a common strut test? I replaced all 4 struts on my 88 about 2 years ago, ( 5000 miles ago) now find that my front passenger side is noisy when going over bumps and I feel it more then the other wheel areas, the strut boot is deteriorated, and the upper bumper rides the shaft, but everything else looks tight and correct. also pushing on the car fender up and down, there doesn't appear to be excessive bouncing . is there a common failure of these components or whatever rubber isolators they attach too? or should I just assume new front struts are needed?

Thanks, MAtt
