Default all wheel drive vs 4x4

i keep looking at the various Escalades - and i love what i see. but can they do
the job i need them to do? i need a 4x4, a real 4x4 , equiped with at least 31" A/T tires.

does anyone here have experience with both the "all-wheel-drive" and a "4x4" and can
provide a comparison driving in gravel, sand, mud and crossing streams?

my Detroit V8 4x4 has on-the-fly locking hubs, 4-wheel posi-traction, low-gear, and
rear ABS ... it is 22 years old, and nearing 200,000 miles and could probably use a break.
then again, maybe it will have to go another 100,000 miles. i just mounted a set
of BFG KO's.
it has also done a fair amount of towing a 6,ooo lb trailer up and down the Sierras
but that may no longer be a requirement.

thanks
