used radio

I bought a used am/fm/cd out of a wreck I was reading in my owners manual that the radio needs to be programed to the car. Does someone know how to do this or should it be taken to a dealer. Thanks

Year would be helpful, however if it's in the owners manual, a trip to the dealer is required to have it programmed.
