Default Major Guard or Certified Used Car

My wife is thinking about a new cadillac. I would take her existing cadillac which is under the initial warranty which is expiring. The dealer suggests we trade her car, I buy the car from the dealer for the trade in value plus the cost to get the car certified which is $1000-1200, plus a dealer paperwork fee of $500. This would give me 3 more years and 50,000 miles. The dealer claims this would be a better warranty than an extended GM Major Guard policy. I probably need something along the lines of 3 years and 24,000 miles.

Do you have any suggestions?

hey man,
i am not for sure what the maj guard has to offer but be careful in what you do. i purchased a exteneded warranty with my caddy, 25 days after i bought it, the head was leaking. the warranty cmpany, and the dealer i bought from screwed me around from almost 2 months not wanting to do anything. i got the bank involved and finally they payed for a different engine and labor. i myself had to put up $900 for some reason, even though i had a 0 deductable. i would go with the certified. you never know when you are going to need the extra 26000 miles on the warranty. not a bad deal if you ask me.

That sounds like GOOD advice to me. I will remember your experience when I purchase used.

Seems to me that foreign makers were offering certified used before GM. Seems common now. I've always shopped local, but the last two I bought were from eBay. Both local sellers, either way...one runs but need parts everywhere, the other is in minor banged up shape with 116K. 1988 Dev.
My first was an '84 Eldo with near 100K miles, I wasn't allowed to test drive from the private party, but it turned out to be fine in many respects. Unless you are a bit knowledgable when shopping and know trouble areas to look for, then it may not be a needed thing to look for, but I certainly think Certifying is a good idea anyway.

Major Guard protects you against unexpected financial expenses by covering parts and labor costs. With Major Guard, virtually every component of your vehicle is covered in the event of mechanical failure beyond the warranty period even if caused by wear and tear coverage. The applicable coverage in the event an orginal or like replacement part is unable to function in normal service.

To sell your car and buy it back, for roughly an additional 2k, everything needs to be in writing before you sell. If it not you could be out of luck. Dealer could tell you market value and reconditioning costs jack the price up considerably more. I have never heard of a dealer trying to do this.
