RE: trouble code 96 deville
P0741 TCC stuck off.
This means your computer is measuring an excessive amount of slippage from the transmissions torque convertor clutch.
It is a generic code that could have one or more problems creating it but almost always the transmission needs to be removed for this code.

Two good sources for finding your trouble codes are the appropriate Haynes manual for your car, and also you can get your own OBD/OBDII reader at walmart. Mine cost under $70.00 and came with a booklet that tells you what each code means. Both are useful things to have. We can also use our reader on my husband's 97 chevy silverado, as well as my brother in laws Sunfire, and a friends Malibu, plus more I can't recall, so it works on quite a few GM vehicles besides your Caddy. I don't know about where you are, but here they charge around $35 just to hook you up to a diagnostic machine, so this little reader pays for itself after 2 uses. We love it and it's really easy to use.

Better yet, get a set of Factory Service Manuals. They are invaluable if you are going to tackle routine maintenance issues or some repair, and even if you take your car in for service, you can go there as an "informed" customer. Ebay is an excellent place to find them cheap.

Clarification ...
factory service manual .. issued by GM to the dealer mechanics and always
available in the open market (ebay, etc.) but not at the retail stores.. INVALUABLE !
Gary is 100% correct. We, the Allanté guys, dont move without these manuals.
typically, they can be had in the range of $20 to $75, depending of the seller and condition.
i also like the idea of having a OBD/OBDII reader in the tool box. some cars cant lieve w/o it.
lastly, the OWNER's MANUAL.
regardless of car model, IMO this manual is not an option, but a must.
on your '96, this one is also avail on CD for around $5
