Default Life of oil by computer?

I had a previous post about oil and while on the subject I have this question.

I am old school and change oil every 3,000 miles but the 95 Deville has a computer that gives a reading on "the remaining oil life".

Do most go by the computer, miles traveled and can we trust the computers calculations?

I just changed the oil in my 1998 Cadillac Deville and kept record on how many miles it went at 50%. I had gone 3,000 at 50% left on the computer of my Caddy...

I still change it at 50% or 3,000 miles, how ever you look at it...

Hey JS: I'm old school too and believe in regular oil changes. I have 415,000 on my work vehicle and the engine has never been touched as yet. As for the caddy well I bought it with pretty low mileage so that's not an issue at this point in time. I wouldn't go by the computer to guage my oil changes, as the driving conditions will determine this. Are you driving in dusty conditions, are your driving in extremely hot weather a lot, are you towing something a lot of the time, things like this. I mostly go by oil color and smell, that will tell you more about what your engine is saying than anything. As soon as it starts to chnge to a slight charcoal color that's when i do a change, usually around 5000km.Hope you are enjoying your ride as much as I am.
