90 deville - MAJOR problem with drive shaft. NEED HELP

here is a pic of the ring:

I cant think of a reason not to remove it.

I mean it doesn't hold the drive shaft in, the axle nut does. I don't know why it is on there in the first place.

Any reason I should leave it on?

EDIT 2/12/10: FWIW i did leave the snap ring on.
