1990 low pressure on AC
tried searching, couldn't find what i needed. i'm trying to recharge the ac and i need to know what side is the low pressure side as it is not marked. i tested both sides and had strange results. the side up near the firewall had high psi and the one down by the pullies was high as well. both are high. any imput is muchly appreciated.
well my main concern is with how high the pressure is. i'm guessing that i have a plug somewhere in the line. the psi was at 110 i drained it down to around 50-60, started the engine and it went right back up. also the AC clutch is not kicking on. we bought the car used and this is the first time recharging the ac. so other than maybe some air got in the line, i don't know what else would cause this. thanks again for any help.
How is the pressure going up if the clutch isn't engaging?
Static pressure (engine not running) should be close to the under hood temp.
The low side should be in the 30 psi range when running (higher with 134a) and high side around 220 - 250 psi.
Do you know which gas is in the car? Which type fitting does it have?

Have you found the low pressure fitting yet?
I have never seen the pressure go up(with the compressor engaged) on the suction side of the system.
Need a little more info to be able to help more.
Are you using high and low gauges or just a top off set?

If everything in the system is working properly the computer stores a trouble code when it detects low freon.
The compressor will not engage until this code is cleared from memory.
If you are unfamiliar with the on board diagnostics then try disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 secs or so.
I am still confused by this

ok my ac was working fine last summer. however the ac was not very cold, so this summer i knew it needed to be recharged. i checked the pressure on the low side and it was around 110psi. that is way to high. it should be around 45. so i released some of the pressure untill my gauge read about 50psi. i started the car, turned on the ac. the ac did not kick on, and after the turned the ignition off i went to check the pressure again. and it went all the way back up to 110psi. i'll clear the codes and see what comes of it.
