Default 1990 Allante Top Problems

I got a 90 Allante a few months ago with a bad rear top pull down motor. I've since rigged up a trunk pull down motor and attempted to pull down the top. The motor started pulling the top down, got about half way, and then the plastic gear, inside the pull down mechanism, stripped a few teeth. I've since purchased a replacement gear but I'm concerned that the same thing will just happen again. My question is this:
In rest postion, preparing to pull down, the roof sits about 1.5" to 2" above the level of the trunk. Even pushing on it I can't fully close this gap. I'm wondering if the top can be adjusted to close this gap or if this is normal? Any help would be appreciated.

with some effort you should be able to push the rear edge down to the trunk edge .. if you cant do that adjust the inside straps .. if that doesnt work, maybe the fabric has probably shrunk and you will then break any pull you install ..

I would also chime in and speculate, since the trunk pull-down does not take nearly as much force to close, that its use as a top pull-down may not work. You may just be continually stripping gears with that set up?
