John Allen Muhammad, the sniper that left 10 dead, was executed Tuesday, 11-10-2009, as relatives of the victims watched. The killing spree terrorized the Washington, D.C., area for three weeks in October 2002.

The 48-year-old Muhammad looked calm but was twitching and blinking, tapping his left foot as the injections began, defiant to the end, refusing to utter any final words. Victims' families sat behind glass while watching.

Muhammad was born John Allen Williams but changed his name after converting to Islam.

He had been in and out of the military since he graduated from high school in Louisiana and entered the National Guard. He joined the Army in 1985 where he earned an expert rating in the M-16 rifle, similar to the .223 caliber Bushmaster rifle used in the D.C. shootings.

The terror ended on Oct. 24, 2002, when police captured Muhammad and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, while they slept at a Maryland rest stop in a car they had outfitted for a shooter to perch in its trunk without being detected.

The US flag is at half mast in honor of the 13 fallen at Ft. Hood, victims of a gunman.

The firing rampage of U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan happened at the Soldier Readiness Center, Ft Hood. This is listed as one of the worst incidents of soldier-on-soldier violence in U.S. Army history.

Hasan wrote: "Fighting to establish an Islamic State to please God, even by force, is condoned by the Islam," and that "Muslim Soldiers should not serve in any capacity that renders them at risk to hurting/killing believers unjustly..."

He will be formally charged in military court with the killing of 13, and wounding 29 more. Hasan was moved late Friday to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Senator Joseph Lieberman is calling for a high-level investigation into what he called “very, very strong signs that Dr Hasan had become an Islamist extremist” and his apparent ties to Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born cleric who moved to Yemen after the September 11, 2001, attacks and who called Major Hasan “a hero” yesterday.

Should a link between Hasan and extremists be proven, it would make the killings on the Fort Hood the first terrorist attack on US soil since 2001.

Pete Hoekstra, of the House Intelligence Committee, stated that his committee had been denied an intelligence briefing on possible links between Major Hasan and al-Qaeda eluding to an attempt of the current administration to block any intelligence that might point to a terrorist attack on US soil.
