Default Detroit, Canada .. err .. Michigan and TRASH

from various sources ...

"Currently, the U.S. Supreme Court prohibits states from banning
Canadian trash without approval from Congress.

Michigan imported more than 12 million cubic yards of trash from
Canada in 2006.
in return we export hazardous waste to Canada.

Canadian trash does not have to meet the same environmental
requirements imposed upon municipal waste created within Michigan’s
own borders. In fact, the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan filed
a lawsuit against the City of Toronto for sending municipal waste to
Michigan that was contaminated with PCB's, which subsequently
leaked into our groundwater supply.

Toronto area is or has closed its waste landfills choosing to export instead.

the NAFTA agreement - and all subsequent 'free trade' agreements were
negotiated to give foreign corporations and the governments of Canada
and Mexico the ability to sue our government for interference with their
profit-making endeavors. They don't sue in a U.S. court, they sue in front
of their own courts."

People laugh but we really need another cabinentpost headed by someone with "common sense." It should be a common sense dept. and I believe it could even replace the newest dept. of security.
What's the matter with these guys. Got a friend in the lumber business in Washington, who tells me how impossible it is to compete with Canadian lumber prices because they have "ZIP" in the way of regulation to cutting trees in Canada. Here we have to make roads into cutting areas and plant for every tree removed and in Canada they can just pass through and rape the forests.
They are damn smart though getting rid of their rubbish in the states. I'll bet it is against our laws to dump ours in the deserts of mexico.

I don't know enough about the lumber business to comment one way or thw other, all I can say is that on a recent business trip at the beginning of May, I flew from Winnipeg up 2,500 miles in a two engine prop at a fairly low altitude to about the 60th line of latitude. All I saw was frozen lakes and green forrests all the way, no sign of any forrest being raped there.

As for the city of Toronto sending it's garbage to Michigan all I can say is that is a disgrace and I am one Torontonian who is completely embarrassed and disolutioned with our pinko mayor and city council who think it is a good solution. Please accept my personal apologies.

Katz,
no reason to apologize, many of us would have to apologize for the actions of our governments.hopefully in the long rungovernments will make the right decisions, although that could be wishful thinking.

Katz,

apology from you is not ever needed. the damn polticians negotiated NAFTA,
not you.

i been upset at ourselves for EXPORTING trash to China and So.America.
i am a believer that you that create it, should own it forever. look at barge after
barge being towed to So.America from NY! look at container after cotnainer
being re-filled with trash on their way back to Asia !

sadly, i have also seen the Colorado go dry as the US takes out all the water and
down in Baja Mexico, they get murky mud and contaminated silt, no longer any water flows.
the fields that once flourished there in Mexico are now but a giant sandbar. the people that
prospered there, now make a meager living with the off-road bikes and the 4x4 crowds.

it was a huge surprise to me when i found about this. i had never heard of this Canada
trash until this week. tonight we were looking into why the Indian nations allow unregulated
and chemically contamianted trash to be dumped in MI. we have no answers.
we got bill after bill stuck in the Senate after moving through Congress. WHY ?

hyperion, same way with steel here in the Mahoning Valley in Ohio, could compete from an efficiency vs lower wages but governmental regs. (epa etc) killed the steel industry (IMHO)

Bill:

Steel? Yes. It has also just about run the chemical industry out of here as well, and Environmental regulations and required permitting have many, many needed power and other projets bottled up, but that is largely because of a mad scramble for Federal participation in the funding for these projects.

The Feds will participate, but only if the continued employment and everlasting job security for literally millions of government employees is somehow thereby ensured.

Global warming should be embroidered on the American flag now that it has been mandated by the media as a proven phenomenon. Just don't look for the proof. It is pretty damned elusive.

JCS, Bill, etc,

is that all not hipocritical of this social crying?

we chase away the industries and with doing that, we EXPORT the pollution,
the hazardous materials, the negative side of industry.

no one around here wants this or that in our back yard.
the American Motto:
"give us the goodies but make them in someone else's backyard."

energy, steel, lumber, garbage disposal, manufacturing, chemicals,
cars, painting, etc., etc.

we even export from State to State. simply look at the fight in MA to build
a wind turbine park in MA, or the lost fight to build nuclear plants, or the fight
to build new refineries, or the fight to drill a new petro hole.

yes, we want it both ways .... no?
we are becoming the pioneers in "outsourcing" everything that you can think off !

Speaking of nuclear plants, FP&L needs to add one but they were stuggling over how to pick a site. After much time of searching and brainstorming they decided to,

put it where the other ones already are, Turkey Point. DUH!

Nulear plants don't seem to have a problem getting through in Florida, but try to drill for oil in the Gulf and Tony "Pro" may come back to life to whack you.
