Default Ride issues on my 68 Fleetwood.

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me wot da f*!@ is up with me Cad??
Just fixed ENDLESS probs on my Caddy. All geared up for some cruizin-but.......Jumped in her for a test drive (to the gas station- of course). When I first start off everything is super slick, quiet and smooth but after about 3 miles @ around 40-50 mph things start to shudder to the point where I have to slow right down or even stop!! First time this happened I was convinced a wheel was gonna come off! Once stopped after a couple of minutes we are away again, super slick and smooth for another 3 miles. I have got out and wobbled all wheels and can feel no play. What the hell is goin on??
I have spent a mint on this car. Going bald and grey fast! HELP!!!!

Hi Slowroll
Don't think it's the tyres. They're all good. I'm thinking maybe wheelbearing but I can't understand how it goes good to start with?? I checked propshaft joints and wheelnuts. It seems strange that you have to do about ten mins before it deteriorates. The problem is more of a vibrating and shudder than a shake. It really does feel like a wheel is coming loose.

I had a similar problem once on a Camaro. Felt like it was coming apart. Some wonderful person had loosened my lugnuts on one wheel. They weren't off, but loose enough the wheel would wobble when moving at speed. Scary stuff.

Thanks Aaron,
Scarry stuff indeed!!
Just jacked the old girl up. No loose wheelnuts! I kinda think it's gotta be bearings but all wheels turn smooth. What the hell can it be??

You never stated where you feel vibration - steering wheel or seat/floor. Sometimes tires or cv joint on driveshaft will heat up after a few miles and cause vibrations.

Jacked her up today. Turned road wheels. Felt a slight notching on passenger side rear wheel. I'm guessing it's a bad bearing. This was done cold so I can only assume this would get worse as the unit heated up?
Nothing is felt on the steering and both front wheels turned smoothly.
I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and replace the rear bearings and hope I'm aiming in the right direction!
This is not a too bigga job I hope. If after doing this work, things are still the same I shall be offering this damned clunker for sale in these classifieds!!!!!! Ten buckssounds about right!
Happy days Eh?
