Default Power antenna problems 97 Deville

I have owned a number of wonderful Caddy's over the years. Never bought a new one, always something with 120K miles, mostly 10 years old, I put another 50K on them and "throw them away"!
Great cars, must have owned at least 8 of them, eventually they all ended up with problems more serious that they were worth, (sadly).
One problem that has occurred quite often, (and it now pops up on this 97), is the power antenna.
This one is now "acting up". The motor in the antenna works, I can hear it.
When I turn radio on I hear motor run but antenna doesn't move. The motor does eventually stop. Then when I turn radio off, again, motor runs and eventually stops but antenna doesn't move.
So this tells me all is "OK" except for what ever kind of mechanism is used to actually move the antenna mast up and down.
I am wondering if there is any "FIX" to them, or should I just get a different antenna unit?
I don't know how the system really works, what drives the mast up, and/or what pulls it down, but what ever that part of the system is, that's where something is broken.
Adding some info here: For a quick fix that might help someone in the future, since the antenna mast can be pulled up and down manually in my case, when I want to have radio on I extend the mast and wrap a small chunk of black rubber electrical tape around the mast at the bottom to prevent it from simply sliding down into the housing. Granted the antenna stays up all the time, but at least one can listen to the radio.
One other thing I have found since original post, the bottom portion of the antenna assembly is "loose". It can be wiggled around, and since I doubt that it is supposed to be that way, that may be where the problem starts. Any ideas? Thanks for any responses.
