Default Hum in steering wheel

98 Deville Concours-55K well cared for miles
Problem: On sweeping left turns if feels like a hum in the steering wheel. Turn the radio off and you can just barely hear it. Stops onreturn to center. Feels like an electric hum. I know this car has electric power steering. I haven't tried rotating the tires yet-it's about time-about 5k since rotating. Is the electric rack having problems? Is it just an annoyance or the sign of bad things to come?

OK, it's hydraulic-a mistake of serious proportions for a mech engineer of 33 years. I inherited it 9 months ago and have justdriven it-a lot-28Kmiles,and changed the oil-you would a thought I would have remembered the PS reservior right on top of the engine!!!!! Checked the fluid level-it wasjust above the "Add"both hot andcold. Put some more in it and it seems to have quieted the hum! HHHHMMMMM!!!!!!!! Don't believe everything your 50somethingyear old mind thinks it has read!

Don't sweat it. There are no dumb asses on this site like on some other sites. Glad slowroll helped you figure it out. Good luck.

Should it leak down again, add LUCAS P.S. fluid and see if that stops the leak and the hum..

another note ..
if not done yet, flush the brake system and
change out the coolant yesterday. why?
read our FAQ section, coolant and headgasket, avoid $4,000 repairs.

ahhhh .. dont feel bad about 50-something .. talk to hyperion (zinzin) ...
he shall enlighten you for the next few decades.

welcome to the friendly Cadillac website.

Stealth,
Yea, I have 2 gals of Dex Cool and the tablets in the garage. I have been waiting for warm weather to mess with water. It's warm now so I have to get on it. Based on my in-laws capabilities-take it to the Cadillac dealer for everything-I expect it has 5 year old coolant in it-second cycle based on age. It's high on my list of things to do!

Final report on hum. Must have been low fluid as after a couple of days of driving I don't notice it anymore. No evidence of fluids on the ground either. HHHMMMMM?????

I have to recind that last email. After driving around more, the left turn hum is still there. Maybe not as loud, but definitely still there. The oil level in the reservior is where I left it when I added oil-doesn't look like I've lost any significant oil yet.

IF you can live with a little hum, it may just keep working.
if it gets worse, time to replace PS pump.

I don't think it is the ps pump as it only happens turning to the left.
