CrankShaft Sensor and Timing!
Hi Guys and Girls,
Maybe someone can help me with this. I have a 2000 Cadillac Escalade and the service engine light is on because of a crankshaft sensor issue. I am sure it's because of the timing because a guy at Advanced Auto told me to change the Modula under the distributor. Which I pulled it out and replaced it. I did put the distributor back in right I hope
. The truck starts great and runs great, I'm not saying that it's timed exactly right, but no major problems with starting and running. I'm pretty close to timing I believe. I can't pass inspection because of the service light being on and the code keeps coming up crankshaft sensor. How do I get the light off or fix this problem? I turned down the distributor and worked my way to advance very slowly and unplugging the battery each time to reset the computer hoping the light would go out when it was timed. I can't seem to get that light off and the truck runs fine. Any suggestion would greatly be appreciated on this.

Distributor has to be installed a certain way, rotating distributor effects cam reference signal not ignition timing. Typically when distributor is removed and re-installed rotor will be 1 tooth away from where it was. FMS or ALLDATA will and possibly Chilton/Haynes manual will have diagram of correct distributor orientation.
Someone had told me that it may be a tooth off, I'm just nervous to pull it out again and to go the wrong way and make it even worse. Thank you for your response on this issue too. Any suggestions on which way I should go if I pull it out? Distributer should be lined up with the #1 right?
Since truck will run, its likely off a tooth try moving rotor 1 tooth counter clockwise or have someone reset it for you. Distributor does not have to come all the way out to move it and you may have to bump starter while some pushes distributor down to full seat housing block - distributor gear has to engage oil pump drive which can keep distributor from fully seating.
Ok 10-4 on that. Now if I turn back a tooth and it's right will the service light go off? Do I have to disconnect the battery and reset computer? How will I know if it's right? Someone told me I have to drive 50 miles for the light to go off, is that correct? It doesn't seem right but who knows. I appreciate all your help with this so thanks for answering my questions on this. Thank you!
Thanks slowroll, it worked perfect. So everybody knows when you do set the distributer in the right spot, the service light does go out within 5 to 10min. Thanks again slowroll for all your help.
