Default coolant for northstar motors

I know my 98 sls requires Dexcool coolant but why can't I use the regular coolant. A buddy told me that he has had trouble with all the Chevy motors he has used it in in the past. It eventually eats up the gaskets. His mechanic friend told him it was the Dexcool so he uses the regular green one now. Any thoughts on this.
