most cases your air condition needs charged. "low refridgerent" = freon, or r134. sorry, didnt get year of car..... however, it needs charged for a reason, and not sure how long it will stay charged. when did you have the system working with cold air? how long have you had the car, and did ac work all that time?
your compressor will shut down when your system is out, or down with refridgerent. (normal)..... you can recharge yourself, and see how long it will last. usually with success. if that doesnt work, then you'll need to have dye run thru system to see where your leak my be. most times a charge will last a for some time.
good luck

the AC needs recharge service. take it to a AC shop, most will service for around $40.

how long has this condition been going on?

the AC must remain charged and must be used or the seals will dry out, the system will then require a $300 to $600 overhaul.
