Cool 429ci timing issues

I cant get my engine to turn over now that I have the proper firing order. According to the manual, the contact points on the distributer should be pointing to #1 spark plug: mine is not. I removed and replaced the distributer in an attempt to correct this and it just doesn't seat in that direction. Now I'm scared as I am not a gear head but somewhat mechanically inclined. I have the shop manual on hand (thank god). Wires are old and some of them seat loosely. Could this be the problem?

The rotor needs to point at number 1 oil pump drive is like to be problem, drive can be rotated with screwdriver and distributor reset. Plug wires should be firmly attached, will cause misfiring mostly.Timing is likely too far advanced. How long or what was done prior to car not starting?
