Default 2000 sls p0386 after stall

We just got this 2000 SLS as a gift, about the second time we drove it,it stalled as we were approaching a traffic light. The car started right back up with a service engine light now on,we had to get back home to N.C. from Fl. so we drove it,have had no problems since.Once home we had the codes read at autozone and it was a p0386,indicating crank position sensor.Looking at the Haynes manual I bought for it, it does not seem ridiculously hard to replace, however the manual says the pcm has to be reprogrammed on 2000 and later models after replacing it, on the 4.6L anyway. I guess what I'd like to know is,if this definately has to be reprogrammed after replacing a crank position sensor, and if so would it be drivable between the replacement and the reprogram, and is this a fluke that may or may not occur again, would you change the part based on one occurence. Thanks for any help in advance.
