I have a 2000 eldorado and the display reads LOW REFRIGERANT/AC OFF, only blows hot air and when I push the A/C on button it will light up saying " A/C OFF". My compressor makes a squealing noise often, though not all the time. I tried charging it with the $20 cans of refrigerant and it wouldnt accept it. I am a single mom and am told these things are rediculously expensive so Im hoping it doesnt need to be replaced but would like to know if there are certain steps I can take to find this out. I drive 1.5 hrs to work 6 days a week and this 100 degree weather and no AC is killing me!!

Usually a squeeky compressor is a clutch going bad , it can be done on the car in most cases. You can stop the squeeling by unplugging the electrical connection.
