1999 DeVille trunk won't close
I own a 1999 DeVille, 45,000 miles -- LOVE this car! However a few idiosynchrasies are starting to creep in. The subject at hand right now is the trunk latch.
The last couple times I've opened the trunk, the motor did not immediately run to "lift" the latch. After several seconds it did, and then I was able to close the trunk normally.
The last time I opened the trunk, the motor did not lift at all and the trunk lid would not close. I reached down and pressed the actuator switch beside the latch several times and suddenly the latch lifted -- then all was fine.
I think I can conclude I've got a sticky switch, but before opening the trunk again to investigate, I thought I'd surf the internet for advice, pictures, or any material that would make it easier to service. Seems to replace any gizmo on any car, getting it out is like a Chinese puzzle and replacement parts are nonexistent or expensive, so I thought I'd investigate before taking the risk of not being able to close my trunk next time it's opened.
Reading notes on this forum and other sites, it appears this is a common problem and that the actuator switch has been known to fail. It is available for around $25. Is this indeed true?
What I'd like to know is:
1. How difficult is it to remove the assembly for inspection? I've been unable to find instructions, or an exploded diagram. Maybe it's a piece of cake, but I fear the Chinese puzzle syndrome. I'd like to know before opening the trunk.
2. What is the switch like? Is it a microswitch with contacts, or an optocoupler device? Microswitches with contacts can wear out, and can generally be verified with an ohmmeter. Opto switches can weaken with age, but often can be fixed by simply cleaning the optical area.
3. If this part is indeed available, does anyone know the OEM part number?
Thanks in advance for your help.
