Default 1998 Cadillac Seville SLS Overheating, need help !

Hi !
i picked this 1998 Cadillac Seville SLS, knowing about the possible head gaskets issues, but could not say no, its in amazing , mint condition, super clean, it actually runs smooth, after 20 minutes or so of driving, coolant read hot on display and gauge, and displayed engine overheating, i also lost heat, so i changed the thermostat, heat seemed okay, back on the road, it did the same thing, my mechanic ran the compression test, no leaks, compression ok, also no white smoke from exhaust, no antifreeze in the oil, no leaks, tried driving it again and again gauge went up to hot, display showed engine coolant hot and then displayed showed engine hot..it was usually after 20 minutes, i dont want to jump the gun and assume its the head gasket, 98k miles and considering the antifreeze level is the same and the compression test came up alright... What else should i do or try. The antifreeze reservoir does smell like exhaust..hate to lose it.. please help !

I had the same issues on a '97 SLS. Things replaced, tests run, and nothing obvious. But I could smell it at the exhaust pipe...

I ended up studding the heads and haven't had any issues in the 6K+ miles since. If you are interested in studding, take the time to read through this web site: Home They were prompt about answering any questions and supplying everything that I need. Great guys, great advice, and prompt trustworthy service. And I'm sure Tim is on this forum somewhere

Also bought a 2-volume service manual for about 80 bucks, and the investment was well worth it. The last engine that I rebuilt was from the mid-80's and I was a bit intimidated with this one. But the service manual walked the rebuild through step by step.

Good luck!

Oh, btw the total cost from start to finished-and-back-on-the-road was less than $2,000
