Default 1983 Eldo does not want to go above 70 MPH

Recently purchased 1983 with the 4100 Electronic inigition. Have paper work showing a major tune up at 23,500 2 1/2 years ago car now has 25,500 miles. Runs great (throttle is stiff) up to 70 MPH and then just will not go above that unless you are going down a big hill. Have heard the 4100 has a lot of major issues including distributor.

Not sure where to start.

I would expect the car be giving you codes by now.
what are they?

IF it is running just great up to 70 mph and then put up a wall, i be looking for fuel related issues.
fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure.

if it running poorly all the way, forget what i just said.

suggest that you go and read this thread and come back with some good info.
https://www.cadillacforum.com/m_9792/tm.htm

Here are some guidelines that might make things smoother for both you and us.
None of this is mandatory. It is a request, so that we can help each other.

#1.
State the problem in its completness and correctness, the car model and year, etc.
When it is a driveability mal-fuction relating to engine/trani/drivetrain,
provide the CODES, always provide the CODES! Buy, borrow, rent a code
reader.

#2.
Tell us when the problem occurs: driving, starting, parking, cold weather, hot weather,
when your aunt drives it, when it rains, when the planets are in line, etc .. you get the point?

#3.
PLEASE TELL US what you have done so far in trying to resolve the problem - read #1 again.
IF nothing, say that. I cannot think of anything more frustrating than we start making suggestions
and we get a "done that." Me for one, usually take a deep breath and dont come back to that
thread when that happens. Other TECHs may be more forgiving.

#4.
DO commit to to return after the problem is fixed and tell us what the problem was. We dont care how
you found the answer or who gave you the solution, but the other owners do care HOW you fixed it!
We spend the time helping you, we ask you spend the time helping others.

#5.
On some issues, specially with A/C & airbags, we are very reluctant to provide suggestions unless
the owner can convince that he/she knows what he/she does with such devices.

#6.
IF I only got a few minutes to surf the site and type responses, chances are that I'm going to 1st look at
the questions of those that keep coming back or have larger #'s of posts or people I know or people that
i seen helping others. THAT my friends, is simply the human equation. I bet the other TECHs do
the same. Look for ways to help others and the favors are more likely to be returned by those that you helped.

#7.
I start my day at the Off-Topic Forum with a cup of jabba. Anyone I see posting there, i make it a point
to remember the name. I will probably remember you when I see you later asking for help. I seem to remember
a lot of that.

IF you own or you are looking to buy an Allante, you are in luck. A few of us here know that model
to the last connector, the last bolt, the last anything. I know, I know, we is obsessed, we IS CRAZY!
If you are looking for advice on other other cars, go for it. There is also plenty of that advice around here.

# nth
At any case, we extend our welcome to all that come here for ANY good reason. You dont need to own a car
to join, the Off-Topic is an equal opportunity FORUM. Almost anything goes.

Pushing the Off and Warmer buttons at the same time - Key on - engine off it reads as follows:
4.8.8 pause 52 pause .7.0. the end.

This is a 4.1 Liter with the digital fuel.

Thank you

Hey There Equalizer: I gather that you have the 250 with DFI . I have th 368 with DFI and I recently rebuilt the throttle body unit. The difference in the power was defiately noticeable and the top end as well.So is you want more of both you may want to consider this option. The kit is about $60 - $80 and it is quite easy to do. Lots of small parts but if you take your time you should have great results. Not as hard as a carb. to overhaul. The fuel pressure regulator on these units is inside the throttle body unit so when you get your pressure up again the atomization is more balanced and more to specs. Mine would only go to 140km before and now I'm up to at least 160. And that's with standard air and exhaust. The tps and timing are a critical adjustment as well on this setup which can only be done with voltmeter and a lot of patience. Good luck and hope to see you on the freeway one day.

Make sure timing is set correctly. There was a recall 83-E-1 for resticted cat conv., it may not supported now 20 yrs. later. If this car has only 25k miles carbon build up is very possible request Do***ent ID# 268918 from local dealer this will describe how to decarbon engine.

Thank you. Have requested do***ent from dealer. Not in possession yet. Tested the Cat and it is not performing. I live in a state (Montana) that does not have any emmisions testing. Am considering just removing the Cat. Will this harm the car. If I remove the Cat, should I or must I remove the rest of the emmisions controls & gadgets?

You should be able to remove cat.converter to "test" for restricted exhaust. However it is illegal to remove permanately. Mustang,Camaro,Vette, etc.... owners' tend to do "long term" testing. Trying to remove/disable other things will on cause other problems.
