Default 03 Seville SLS issue

I have an 03 Seville that I have some questions about.
On the rear drivers side suspension, there is a rod that is attached to the suspension on one end, and a small black box on the other. The peice that connects the rod to the box is broken.
Does anyone know what this is? The only thing I can think of is that it's a suspension sensor for the stability system. There is not a rod/box on the passenger side rear.
I've removed the rod from the suspension so it doesn't hang down and catch something.
The car isn't throwing codes so I'm not worried about it right now, but I do need to fix it (wife's DD, Wyoming winter = horrible roads).

It looks like it shouldn't be too hard to fix, pop the top off the box, replace the plastic part that connects the box to the rod, and connect the rod.
However, I'm worried about the interaction between the box and the car's computer.
Can anyone provide some more information for this black box?
Here's some pics.

Here's a closer pic of how they connect.

looks to me like an anti rollover sensor ..

but not sure ...

you may not be getting codes if the sensor is at the neutral position
can you turn the peg? that may give you a code or reaction ..
but not sure if the car has to be in motion
