Default '96 Caddy overheats

My '96 Caddy STS overheated and anti-freeze began seeping in my interior (under my glove box). Has anyone ever experienced this? Any ideas for repair?

Default '97 Caddy STS overheating

I've seen on this forum where the heater core can be bypassed by connecting the 2 heater core hoses at the firewall. Has anyone seen this work as a temp fix? If so, any suggestions to avoid problems in the process is appreciated. I desperately need vehicle for a short distance (lest than 10 miles) tomorrow.
