Default 1996 STS Driver Information Center (DIC)

I have a 1996 STS with analog guages. There is a small strip below the main guages that shows Odometer / Turn Signals / OBD / Etc. (this is the DIC).

The DIC is completely dead (has no display at all), in fact the dealer couldn't get any information out of it. I would just replace it from a junk yard except I am told that each one is programmed for the car.

The dealer says there are around 10 different DICs for this model year, so they don't know which one I need. They cannot read the old one so they can't identify it to replace it.

They say they can send it away to be repaired/replaced, and that it could be from 200 - 1500 dollars to repair/replace. Removing it will disable the car and it will take at least a week for me to get it back.

Can anyone confirm or help???

Aftermarket repair ???

Aftermarket dash ???

Thanks in advance.

That sounds like DIC to me. Why don't you pull the cluster, it will take maybe 20 minutes at most. Get the part number from the back of it, put it back in then call the salvage yards. I think that with your VIN and part number you should track one down PDQ.

Have a look at the link and gives these guys a call:

That makes perfect sense to me, except I don't understand why Cadillac couldn't do that when it was in to have the dash checked.

They tell me that they cannot identify which unit (no outside part number & they can't power it up to find out). They also tell me that I can't just get any dash from another car since they are programmed for each car & may be different. I would have thounght that they would be happy to sell me a new one.

Are these guys out to lunch (biggest Cadillac dealer in British Columbia)???

Have you replaced one before??? or know someone who has???

Just don't want to pull my dash apart for nothing or order a part I can't return.

Thanks Again [&:]
