Default Oil Leak in 00 STS

00 STS is slowly leaking oil. I assume it is contacting the exhaust manifold as I can occasionally smell burnt oil. I took it to Cadillac for an estimate and they want $2600. The explanation I received is that the it's a big job because the tranny has to be dropped, etc. To the credit of the mechanics rep, he told me it wasn't worth spending that kind of $$ at this time and to just continue to monitor it to see if it gets worse. It doesn't appear to have changed much over the last 6 months. I do notice that it leaks more when it sits idle for any length of time. I had a similar problem with my 95 STS and 88 Deville. I've talked to a co-worker who has experienced similar problems with his 98 Deville. Is it common for most Cadillacs to experience oil leaks? My co-worker as well as my brother said they were able to eliminate the leaks by using an oil additve that is supposed to stop leaks by "filling in" the gaps between the seals. Has anyone experienced success with an additive? If so, please tell me what you used. Thanks.

There were recalls for the pre 2000 Northstars for main seals all repaired under warranty so yes there are problems with oil leaks. Can you pinpoint the leak better. If you smell burnt oil it would lead me to look at the valve cover bolts for loosness or a gasket replacement is necessary. As far as additives go they do work in many cases. My experience is that Gold Eagle is a good product:

Many people will tell you not to use the additive but I think that in moderataion it would be ok. In other words don't use 4 litres of stop leak just one bottle.
