Default Gear Select Problem

Hello:

This may have been discussed previously, I did search and didn't find anything.

I have a 1990 Seville, 110,000 miles and the drivetrain appears to work fine, however on the Driver Information Center it states "Gear Select Problem 27". I spoke with the Dealership and they (not surprisingly) seemed clueless. Does anyone have any insight as to what may cause this? It shifts fine. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not overly worried about it, but would like to have it resolved. Thanks.

Check for codes, how well shifter operate? does is have play? Problem may relate to worn shift linkage / cable, PRNDL switch or eithers adjustment.

In addition to what slowroll said,on many models there is a corelation sensor that matches gear selector with actual gear transmission is in. Could be something as simple as not holding the brake when shifting gears or rolling the car when shifting into reverse for example. Clear the codes then be very diligent when shifting. Error could also set it you shifted on the fly.
