i have a 2001 sls that i bought used with 33,000 miles. it now has 42,000 miles. i drive on the highway very little, but have noticed a vibration starting around 70mph. i have read that other owners report similar problem. any ideas on how to fix the problem. the tires are balanced.

omeone told me once about something with the car "breathing" enough. I'm not an expert but if they were right check the air filter/ intake and or exhaust system. Don't take my word for it though, like i said I'm not an expert or anything near it.

We think the root cause is the cradle and strut mounts were designed too loose.

Go pry on the rear of the engine cradle. I think you will be amazed at how loose it is....

Then consider, what would this do on a not so perfect road at 70 mph?

Then consider, everything is mounted to the cradle....engine, trans, control arms, steering rack etc.

See this post....

You could just have a broken belt in one of your tires. Im no expert either, but you never know.
Which tire it is can be hard to tell, but if you can feel heavy wobbling in the steering, its probably one of the fronts.
Not often, but some times you can see dimple in the sidewall. A sure indication of a broken belt. Check em out.

Good Luck

At around 40,000 miles, Id find it hard to believe its your struts or any suspension problem. But It still, very well could be.
But I would still start with the tires.

Later.
