Default 1999 Seville STS; Gear Shift Sticks in Park

Hello Forum Members,

First time on this site and it looks great. I am having a problem getting the shift control onmy 1999 Seville out of the park position. I step on the brake and it feels as thoughthe gear shift lever is stuck in park and will not move into a gear selection. With some extra effort it does release but something does not feel right. Anyone have an idea of the problem and whatI can do ? Working on cars is a hobby of mine. Thanks so much for your help.

Mark

quasi...hey welcome to the Forum!.... nice to have new members..... so 99sts, me too.... how about once you have it out of park, does it glide freely from, say drive to reverse, or to 3rd, 2nd etc?.... as you probobly know there is a safety switch and i think that it is giving you the problem...... get back to us on the gliding, after out of park. possibly some other member has an idea in the mean time. good luck quasi, again welcome

Thanks rickyd,

No I did not know there was a safety switch, but I kind of guessed so. Once out of park the gear selection works fine. This started months ago as just a little hesitation; now it's getting serious. Funny how that happens. Thanks for your help.

Drinks spilled on console mounted shifter can cause linkage to stick resulting in this condition. You will need disassemble console and check operation of shifter and brake shift interlock soleniod.

Thanks Slowroll,

Checked with my wife and found in fact drinks have been spilled. Good call !! I have access to All Data web site. Have not disassembled console before, but will give this a try. Do you know location of brake shift interlock selenoid ? Thanks so much for your help.
