Default 1998 sls Tested positive for Hydrocarbons!

Can someone help me! I had my 1998 sls at the caddy garage for a over heating problem. They stated I need a new engine that tested positive for hydrocarbons in the cooling system. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????They said the engine has internal damage. They were not specific on the damage. The car runs like a champ and does not heat up all the time. I need some advice what to do from here. I did repalce the thermostat before that did not help. SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!!!![:@]

Internal damage is a broad statement.
I would want to know what was damaged and what was the cause?

If the engine has high milage sometimes a new or reman engine is a better option,
but repairing an overheating condition is almost always cheaper than replacing an engine.

tested positive for hydrocarbons in the cooling system. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????
This means combustion from 1 or more cylinders is entering the cooling system. Usually a blown head gasket.

Thanks for the info! The car has 88k on it. Do you suggest replacing the engine or try to find out what is wrong? The caddy dealer said they would have to tear the engine apart.

I would agree that without disassemble you never know "for sure", but they should have a good idea of whats wrong and how much it would cost to fix it. Saying you need a new engine is the easy way out.
Repairing a Northstar is not for your average Joe but a Caddy dealer should know the ins and outs.
They may not have anyone onhand who is comfortable with that type of repair. Make sure you know where they stand and vise versa before you write out a blank check.

88k is not high mileage and unless i saw multiple problems (low oil pressure, knocking, smoking, heavy engine sludge) we would quote you for a worst case repair. Engine replacement through GM comes with a 3 yr 50k mile warranty so its always a consideration.

Thanks agian for the information. Is there a test to determine a blown head gasket? The car does not smoke or have any type of water or mist coming out of the exhaust. There is no loss of coolant. I live in a small town and I am not certain where can take the vehicle to have it properly diagnosed. If the dealer can't. Who will? Thanks again for your input on this matter.
